February 2024
We spent the weekend in Los Angeles with my brother and sister-in-law, visiting our son who was there on a temporary duty assignment (TDY). Since Nicole and our son had never been to Universal Studios Hollywood and Kurt hadn’t been since he was a teenager, we decided it was the perfect time to go.
If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping right into your favorite films or shows, Universal Studios Hollywood is about as close as it gets. Nestled in the hills of Los Angeles, this theme park is part movie set, part thrill ride, and part immersive fantasy land. We spent a full day exploring, and let me tell you it’s not just a theme park, it’s an experience.
We got there right at opening, which I highly recommend. The lines were short, and we walked right in. The excitement builds as you stroll through Universal CityWalk, a lively promenade filled with neon signs, restaurants, and shops. Once you pass through the entrance, the Hollywood magic hits you instantly. The iconic spinning globe out front is the perfect photo op, and of course we had to get a group picture before heading inside.
Our first stop was Super Nintendo World and Mario Cart: Bowser’s Challenge since it’s the park’s newest land and ride so draws a crowd. Walking through the green warp pipe felt like stepping straight into a video game, with bright blocks, spinning coins, and Bowser’s Castle towering ahead. The ride itself uses AR goggles to put you right inside a Mario Kart race dodging obstacles, tossing shells, and racing alongside Mario and friends. (This is a motion sickness safe ride!)
The famous Studio Tour was our next stop, a must do at Universal. Boarding the tram felt like stepping behind the curtain of Hollywood. The ride takes you through working backlots where movies and shows are filmed. One moment we were rolling past the eerie Bates Motel and the Jaws attraction, and the next we were dodging dinosaurs in the Jurassic World set. My favorite part, though, was the Fast & Furious Supercharged finale, it was full of adrenaline, car chases, and “wow” moments.
Next, we stepped into Hogsmeade Village, and it was pure magic. Cobblestone streets, snow covered rooftops, and the sight of Hogwarts Castle made it feel like we’d been transported into J.K. Rowling’s world. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey was absolutely mind blowing, we soared with Harry one moment and were dodging Dementors the next. (A warning for those who get motion sick: this might not be the ride for you.) Of course, we couldn’t leave without a frothy butterbeer and a stop at Ollivanders for a wand.
Universal Studios has something for every type of fan, and the rides did not disappoint:
- Jurassic World – The Ride: A water adventure with jaw dropping animatronics – and yes, we got soaked.
- The Simpsons Ride: A hilarious motion simulator that had us laughing non-stop.
- Transformers: The Ride-3D: High-octane, immersive action that feels like you’re in the middle of a blockbuster. (Another motion-sickness warning here!)
- Revenge of the Mummy: The Ride: An indoor roller coaster that hurls you into total darkness. You start by creeping through an ancient tomb, then once Imhotep’s curse is unleashed, you blast forward with sudden drops, sharp turns, and even a terrifying backwards section. It’s fast, intense, and one of the park’s best. (Even with my motion sickness, I managed this one without issue!)
When it comes to food, Universal doesn’t disappoint either. From giant donuts at Lard Lad (The Simpsons) to themed dining at Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade, even meals feel like part of the adventure. Pro tip: try the fish and chips at Three Broomsticks, it’s surprisingly authentic!
Tips for Visiting:
- Get the Universal Express Pass if you can, it saves hours of waiting in line.
- Download the Universal Studios app for wait times and show schedules.
- Wear comfortable shoes as the park is built on different levels, and you’ll do plenty of walking.
- Stay for the WaterWorld show it’s an action-packed stunt spectacular you won’t forget.
Universal Studios Hollywood is the perfect blend of thrills, nostalgia, and movie-making magic. Whether you’re a die-hard film fan, a Harry Potter enthusiast, or just looking for a fun day in Los Angeles, this park is a must visit. I left with a camera full of photos, a bag full of souvenirs, and a smile that lasted the whole trip back.
